What Is A Heat Pump and How Does It Work?
Heat pumps are devices that take a heat source and use it to warm or cool an area. Heat pumps essentially pull heat from the air or the ground to heat a given space. They can also be reversed to cool the same space. The advantage to this system is that you don’t need to install separate heating and cooling units in addition to saving on energy costs.

What Are the Benefits of Installing a Heat Pump System?
If you are looking for a highly efficient way to warm or cool different zones of your home, a heat pump may be the right solution. These ductless heating and cooling systems are becoming increasingly popular as a replacement for old, inefficient methods of controlling household climate.
Whether you are building a new home, adding on to your house, or looking for the best option to replace your current heating system, it may be the perfect time to install this energy efficient system.
A heat pump offers many benefits, including:
- Saves you money on energy bills
- Gives you more comfort and control
- Does not require ductwork
- Provides a single solution for heating and cooling a home
- Creates far less noise than a traditional heating system
- Delivers proven, time-tested results
- Reduces carbon emissions
- Requires less maintenance than conventional systems
- Lasts up to twice as long as other heating systems
Maine Rebate Programs
Are you looking to save even more money by installing new heating? Efficiency Maine offers great incentives that can help you do just that. Over the last five years, more than 45,000 ductless heat pumps have been installed across the state, and today many of those units would qualify for a rebate through Efficiency Maine’s new ductless heat pump rebate program. If you install a new ductless heat pump in your home, you could receive thousands of dollars back in return.

Tier 1 Heat Pumps
Tier 1 heat pumps are anything with an AHRI-rated HSPF of 12.0 or higher for single indoor units, or 10.0 or greater for multiple indoor units. Here’s the good news: for tier 1 units, your first unit qualifies for a $500 rebate, and your second unit qualifies for a $250 rebate.
Tier 2 Heat Pumps
Tier 2 heat pumps have a more stringent set of guidelines: they must have an HSPF rating of 12.5 or greater, be a single-zone unit, they must be wall-mounted, and they must be installed after January 1st, 2020 in a home that is not served by natural gas. (The HSPF is a measurement of performance and energy efficiency given out by the Air Conditioning, Heating, & Refrigeration Institute).
For tier 2 units, your first system qualifies for a $1,000 rebate and your second qualifies for a $500 rebate. However, you have to act fast if you want to take advantage of this rebate: there is a lifetime limit of two heat pump indoor unit rebates per dwelling, and you’re only eligible for your rebate if you apply within 12 months of the completion of your upgrade.

Who Can Install a Heat Pump?
Certain types of heat pumps are more affordable and easier to install, but no matter what type of heat pump system you select, installation requires the expertise of a professional Portland HVAC technician. It is not safe to install a heat pump yourself unless you are certified in plumbing and electrical work.
How to Choose the Right Size Heat Pump
Selecting the right size heat pump for your Portland home is crucial to ensure optimal performance, energy efficiency, and year-round comfort. An improperly sized heat pump can lead to issues like frequent cycling, inadequate heating or cooling, and increased energy consumption. At Pine State Services, we're here to guide you through the process of choosing the perfect heat pump size for your specific needs.
Here's how to make the right decision:
- Conduct a Home Assessment: Start by evaluating your home's heating and cooling requirements. Consider factors such as square footage, insulation, window quality, ceiling height, and the local climate in Portland. The more accurately you assess your needs, the better the heat pump size will match your home.
- Perform a Load Calculation: A load calculation, also known as a Manual J calculation, is a comprehensive analysis of your home's heating and cooling needs. It takes into account the local climate, insulation levels, and specific room dimensions. Professional HVAC contractors, like Pine State Services, use specialized software to perform this calculation accurately.
- Understand Heat Pump Sizing: Heat pump sizes are typically measured in British Thermal Units (BTUs) or tons. One ton of cooling is equal to 12,000 BTUs per hour. Your heat pump should be sized to provide the necessary heating and cooling capacity for your home. Oversizing or undersizing can lead to inefficiencies and discomfort.
- Consider Climate Factors: Portland's climate experiences both warm summers and cold winters. When selecting a heat pump size, it's important to choose one that can efficiently handle the extremes of the local climate. Consult with an HVAC professional who is familiar with the unique heating and cooling requirements in the area.
- Account for Zoning and Room Layout: If your home has multiple zones or different room layouts, consider how the heat pump will distribute air. Ductless mini-split heat pumps and multi-zone systems provide more flexibility in addressing specific comfort needs in different areas of your home.
- Rely on Professional Expertise: The most accurate way to determine the right size heat pump is to consult with an experienced HVAC professional. They will take all relevant factors into consideration, including load calculations, and recommend the ideal system size for your home.
- Don't Assume Bigger Is Better: It's a common misconception that a larger heat pump will provide better performance. In reality, an oversized heat pump may cycle on and off frequently, leading to inefficiencies and wear and tear on the system. A professional assessment will help you avoid this pitfall.
Choosing the right size heat pump is a critical step in ensuring your home's comfort and energy efficiency. Pine State Services is here to assist you in making this decision. Our experienced technicians will perform accurate load calculations, consider all relevant factors, and recommend the ideal heat pump size to keep your Portland home comfortable year-round.
