How to Prevent Common Winter Plumbing Problems
This time of year arrives with so much excitement – precious trick-or-treaters, loved ones together around Thanksgiving tables, and the magic of the holidays. But with the lovely comes the ugly. The cold weather and bitter temperatures can cause a whole world of plumbing problems. Stallion Heating and Air Conditioning is here with some preventative measures to help you decrease your chance of experiencing these common winter plumbing problems.
Frozen pipes are a common plumbing problem for Philadelphia. This usually happens when high water pressure from the main water pipe merges with freezing temperatures. To help keep this plumbing problem from happening to you, leave a faucet somewhat open to let water continuously flow through. If you do find a frozen pipe, shut off the main water supply to stop the pipe from rupturing. Try warming the frozen area of the pipe with heated water and if that doesn’t work, give Stallion Heating and Air Conditioning a call and we’ll send one of our professional plumbers out to examine the issue.
Broken Water Line
An opening or break in your water pipe could cause serious damage to your home. Water piping openings or breaks are typically a result of a frozen garden hose. If you leave your hose connected to your water spout after a freeze, the ice inside can create a pressure build up in your home’s water pipes and create a leak or a break. To avoid this problem, make sure your garden hoses are drained and disconnected before freezing temperatures set in.
Failing Hot Water Systems
If your hot water heater is not functioning as well as expected, verify that the temperature is set high enough. If you have a gas water heater, confirm the pilot light is still lit. If everything looks right, call Stallion Heating and Air Conditioning so we can send out a professional plumber to evaluate what’s going on. To avert this issue altogether, be sure you are scheduling yearly hot water heater maintenance and it’s ideal if you service it well before cooler temperatures arrive. Call 215-259-5850 or schedule online to ensure you don’t get left with cold water this winter.
